If you are thinking about starting a lifestyle blog, don’t think about it, start it immediately. It’s easy to Start a Blog and inexpensive too. It can become your best new hobby. And you can even earn extra money from your blog.
This post is part of the series of How to Start a Blog. As a post has already been written in detail about How to Start a Blog, here I’ll just write about starting a Lifestyle Blog. The main steps include Setting up your blog, Managing your Blog, Creating Blog Content, Promoting Your Blog and Monetizing your Blog.
This guide will walk you through the basic setup of a blog. Let’s get started.
Before diving into Creation mode
Decide your niche
It is important to think about your theme/niche of your blog and go with the one that works for you. Lifestyle bloggers choose a specific niche to work around it and post about it. Getting specific helps visitors to know about the overall content of your blog and will expect the same content through out. Getting specific in lifestyle niche can be fashion and beauty, art and culture, family and relationships, cooking etc. It’s not must to be specific about your niche but it’s very helpful if you want to make a follower base and regular revisiting users.
Decide your blog name
Once you decide your blog’s niche, the next thing is to decide it’s name too. In the internet world, the name of any website is called “Domain”. Every website has a domain (name). Like the domain of my blog is www.amumblogger.com. It’s a good practice to research and think about the name for your blog and not just selecting a random name. Your blog’s name should be easy to remember and pronounceable, not too complex.
Decide a blogging platform
There many blogging platforms available, You have to decide which one to choose. Have a loot at The Top 10 best blogging sites and publishing platforms in 2016. Most of them are free to use. They have many limitations for those who wants to do blogging for career and make some money out of it.
The top blogging platform used by millions of bloggers is the Self-hosted WordPress platform. It offers tons of features and has thousands of plugins, free and paid. For beginners, it is important to understand that WordPress has two versions, One is the free version which is WordPress.com and Second is the Self-hosted version which is WordPress.org. The one we and millions of bloggers use is the second one, WordPress.org. I know it’s confusing for the newbies but let me tell you in one line statement that the WordPress.com version is limited in functionalities and customization and doesn’t allow you to advertise on it.
Throughout this guide, we will be talking about the Self-hosted WordPress platform.
Now that you have decided the niche, name and blogging platform for your blog, let’s setup your blog now.
Setting up your Blog
1. Choosing a Domain Name for your Blog
What is a Domain Name?
A Domain Name is the name of your blog. For Example, the domain name of this blog is amumblogger.com and If you type that domain name into an internet browser anywhere in the world you will be sent to this site.
Domain names are registered with domain registrars and usually both the domain registration and hosting is provided by the same company.
I Believe you should read these 9 Important things to consider when choosing a Domain Name before buying your domain.
2. Choosing a Web Host for Your Blog
What is Web Hosting?
Web hosting is a service that allows organizations and individuals to post a website or web page on to the Internet. A web host, or web hosting service provider, is a business that provides the technologies and services needed for the website or webpage to be viewed in the Internet. Websites are hosted, or stored, on special computers called servers.
When Internet users want to view your website, all they need to do is type your website address into their browser. Their computer will then connect to your server and your webpages will be delivered to them through the browser.
Most hosting companies require that you own your domain name in order to host with them. If you do not have a domain name, the hosting companies will help you purchase one.
That’s why you need a hosting for your blog. Choosing the best hosting is very important. A bad host will make your blog take long times to load, security issues or your blog won’t even load etc.
There are hundreds of web hosting companies providing domain registration and hosting but I recommend iPage for your blog. Why? Because,
